December 2020 : AFM-Telethon

We would like to present the great initiative carried out over the last few days and weeks by the French people abroad to raise funds for the AFM-Telethon. The 2020 edition of the Telethon ended on Saturday, December 5th. Julie Danel, Sector Manager for the French in the UK, agreed to tell us more at the time of the final balance.

Q. How long have you been thinking about this project?

A. I’ve been thinking about this project for about two years. But it was only this year that I decided to apply to AFM-Telethon to become head of the UK sector. London is home to a large number of French people, so it would have been a shame not to take advantage.

Q. What kind of support did you receive?

A. I was able to take advantage of the actions that have already been initiated in the English capital over the last seven years: the EIFA and the Charles de Gaulle French High School  (Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle), to name a few, had already carried out some amazing initiatives to support the AFM-Telethon. I also benefited from the help of the coordinator of the Telethon for French people abroad (Téléthon des Français de l’étranger), Mrs Marion Lovell.

Q. What were the main challenges?

A. I had planned to set up partnerships to organise different events such as sports races or a French food market, the profits of which would have been donated to the AFM-Telethon, but with the Covid-19 pandemic, I had to completely revise my plans. So I went full digital for this campaign and launched a fundraising page on October 12th.

Q. What do you remember about this fundraising campaign?

A. First of all, a very nice human experience and many new encounters. A bit of stress too, as I was very keen to make a lasting difference and make the Telethon better known here in the UK. I hope to have succeeded.  I was pleased to see that Channel 2 in France (France 2) reported on the efforts made on this side of the Channel during the programme on Saturday December 5th.

I would also like to point out that it is still possible to make a donation, for a few more weeks, from the following link:

Q. Have you set a target for next year?

A. Do it again and do it even better!
